speed of the courts

Under the principle ʺJustice delayed is justice deniedʺ the Rule of Law Monitor team pays particular attention to metrics around the speed of the law.

In this analysis we focus on the hundreds of thousands of cases that pass through US Federal District Courts each year.

We measure the time it takes from filing to disposition.

speed over time

Cases typically take 9.2 months from filing to final disposition. This increases to 29.8 months where there is a pretrial or trial.

speed by court

Speed varies significantly by court. The West Virginia Southern District Court is currently taking over 5 years.
